Pathways to Write

At Prescot Primary School, we are proud to be a Pathways to Write school. We know how important writing is for children’s future success, and this approach gives every pupil the chance to grow into a confident, independent and enthusiastic writer.

What is Pathways to Write?

Pathways to Write is a structured programme that uses high-quality children’s literature as the inspiration for writing. Each unit is built around an engaging book that sparks curiosity and provides a meaningful purpose for writing. Through these carefully chosen texts, children explore rich vocabulary, sentence structures and writing techniques that help them to develop both accuracy and creativity.

How does it support our children?

  • Skills in grammar, punctuation and spelling are taught and practised in a clear, progressive way.
  • Children are given exciting opportunities to apply these skills through stories, non-fiction and poetry.
  • Units include opportunities for children to revisit and secure key skills so that learning “sticks.”
  • Writing is linked to other areas of the curriculum, helping children to see the value of writing across different subjects.
  • Children learn to plan, draft, edit and publish their writing, building pride in their work.

Our aim
Through Pathways to Write, we want children not only to meet the expectations of the National Curriculum but also to enjoy writing and see themselves as real writers. Whether crafting a story, explaining ideas in a report, or exploring poetry, our pupils are encouraged to use writing as a powerful tool for learning and self-expression.
