Maths

At Prescot Primary School and Nursery, we aim to develop confident, resilient and enthusiastic mathematicians who believe they can succeed. Through Inspire Maths and Mastering Number, we build strong foundations in factual, procedural and conceptual knowledge, enabling children to make connections and develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We want children to be curious about mathematics, persevere when learning is challenging and confidently apply their knowledge to problems and unfamiliar situations.

Mathematical talk and oracy are an important part of our approach. Children develop the vocabulary and confidence to explain their thinking, justify their choices, use different representations and respectfully challenge the ideas of others. Within our tech-rich learning environment, technology is used purposefully to remove barriers, enhance learning and provide alternative ways for children to explore, represent and demonstrate their mathematical understanding.

Above all, we want mathematics to be meaningful and relevant. Children are given opportunities to recognise and apply maths in real-life contexts, understanding its importance beyond the classroom. Our ambition is to raise standards for every learner and ensure that children leave us with the mathematical knowledge, skills and confidence they need for the next stage of their education and, ultimately, for adult life and their future.
