GEOGRAPHY CURRICULUM INTENT

Our intent is to inspire curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, developing knowledgeable, thoughtful and responsible geographers. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, children build and revisit their locational and place knowledge, making connections year on year as they learn about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. To strengthen this sense of place, each year group has an annual focus on a key country, which children encounter repeatedly through different projects and areas of the curriculum. By ‘visiting’ the same country on a number of occasions, children gradually build a richer picture of its location, landscapes, climate, people, culture and ways of life, making connections between new learning and what they already know and comparing it with other places, including their own locality.

Children develop an increasingly secure understanding of physical and human processes, alongside fluency in ambitious geographical vocabulary. Our curriculum encourages them to ask questions, observe, investigate, interpret information and think critically about issues affecting people and our planet, both now and in the future. A strong focus on Prescot and our local area gives children confidence in understanding the geography of the place they call home and connecting it to the wider world. Wherever possible, we bring geography to life through fieldwork, visits, practical enquiry and real experiences, enabling children to gather, analyse and communicate geographical information in different ways. Meaningful connections are made with other curriculum subjects, helping children see geography as part of a bigger picture.

Ultimately, we want children to understand their place in an interconnected world, recognise their responsibility as global citizens and feel empowered to make informed choices and take positive action for people and our planet.
