English

Our intent is to place communication at the heart of our English curriculum, developing confident readers, purposeful writers and articulate speakers and listeners who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to express themselves and engage thoughtfully with others. We build strong foundations in phonics, reading, writing, spelling and handwriting, while explicitly teaching children to talk, learn through talk and listen with understanding. High-quality, diverse and vocabulary-rich texts inspire a love of reading, stimulate discussion and provide meaningful models for writing, enabling children to encounter different lives, cultures, ideas and perspectives. We provide authentic opportunities to read, speak and write for different purposes and audiences, encouraging creativity, critical thinking and individual voice. Through high expectations, adaptive teaching and the thoughtful use of technology, we seek to remove barriers and ensure every child can succeed. Ultimately, our English curriculum empowers children to find their voice, understand the voices of others and become fluent, thoughtful and confident communicators – prepared to learn, participate and thrive in their future.
