Curriculum Update

Curriculum design is very much at the forefront of educational discussion at the moment. We have been working hard to develop a curriculum that engages and challenges our children on many levels.

At Prescot Primary, maths is delivered using a supported curriculum called 'Inspire Maths'. https://global.oup.com/education/content/primary/series/inspire-maths/?region=uk 

This is now embedded across the school and has transformed how we approach the teaching of maths.  We can see our children responding very well and are excited about the young mathematicians who are coming through. We hope to run some maths workshops for families as we start the new academic year.

Also - we are pleased to announce that we will once again be working in partnership with Chester Zoo this summer. Our conservation project is called: Wildlife Connections. Find more about it here: https://www.chesterzoo.org/what-you-can-do/campaigns/fundraising/wildlife-connections/

Accelerated Reader is going from strength to strength!

Accelerated Reader is now firmly embedded from Y3 to Y6. It is an amazing programme that allows us to see what types of texts our children are reading and how often. It is also lovely to see so many children taking ownership of their reading.

We are also proud to announce that all  children together have read 61,118,616 words read this year, in a total of 11,089  books!

All children who have hit their reading targets this half term enjoyed a pyjama day, with a theme of bedtime reading. 

Planning ahead for avid readers, we have the Scholastic half-price book fair in school on Tuesday 16th July.

Such a busy month for Y5!

Y5 have had an extremely busy half term. We visited Liverpool World Museum in relation to our topic ’Stargazers’. We were able to go into the planetarium and learn all about how we get night and day, how the Earth moves and all about Tim Peake’s journey into Space. It was really interesting and helped to embed the learning we have done in class.

During this trip we were also able to visit the Egyptian level and  consolidate our learning from last term - we loved seeing the actual mummies and remembered how we had mummified our tomatoes!

Y5 have also been swimming this term. We have spent two weeks at Huyton Pool learning different skills and techniques to help us safely swim across the pool. These sessions really highlighted the children’s perseverance and determination, especially those who have not swam before. The more confident swimmers developed their existing skills such as trying different strokes, learning how to breathe correctly and collecting bricks off the bottom of the deep end!

All children should be really proud of themselves!

Reception welcome the animals!

There has been lots of excitement in Reception as Acorn Farm arrived at school! The children were amazed when the farm visitors spent an afternoon with us. It was a wonderful and very informative session. 

During the session, the children welcomed the opportunity to handle the sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, hens, rabbits, guinea pigs and a rat! They demonstrated care and concern towards them.

They thoroughly enjoyed learning about the different types of animals and the differences between them.

Some of the children had some super questions for Alison and Catherine who commented that they felt very welcomed and were very impressed by the children’s responses.

Well done Reception - keep up the super learning and enthusiasm!

EYFS Sports Day

What a wonderful day with wonderful children! Our EYFS Sports Days had the best of the weather and were a great success. Well done to all of the children who were engaged throughout. Thanks also to the older Sports Leaders who were extremely responsible whilst setting up and organising the games. 

Tesco open our new EYFS outdoor spaces.

It was a grand event to mark a grand achievement! After winning the TESCO 'Bags of help' scheme, our Early Years' outdoor provision has been transformed. We were very proud to show Tesco colleagues all of the hard work that has been done to create outstanding spaces for our children to enjoy.

Thank you to all of the families who turned up for the opening. We value your support and we know that the children are extremely happy with what the community has done for them.

Y6 keep check on the roads...

As our older children become ever more independent, it is vital that we reinforce aspects of safeguarding that will keep them out of danger. We hear of many accidents on the roads and have been very pleased with the road safety sessions offered byt KMBC to our Y6 this week.

The children did a seatbelt survey and measured the speed of passing cars. they talked about stopping distances and the consequences of not wearing a seatbelt. 

The children now have a greater road-sense and are more able to understand the dangers when crossing the road.

Careers Showcase 2019

What another successful experience for our children! Our third annual careers showcase was a vibrant affair with lots of activity as children tried out jobs they may like in the future. Careers ranged from occupational health specialists, HR teams and Duke of Edinburgh leaders to editors, pilots and plumbers - and many more. 

The children asked many thoughtful questions but the most common one centred around wages and pay!

The many visitors were amazed by the behaviour and engagement of the pupils. Some of the feedback included:

'I absolutely love coming here and engaging with the children, staff and visitors'. Jolly Julie, British Heart Foundation.

'Your children are a credit to school. They were very polite and engaged'.

'The children were very interested, polite and friendly. It was great to see the children and hear about their interests.' S. Childs, Krauf.

'Once again a lovely afternoon talking to the children about the job I love. The children are a credit to the school.' K. Stanton.

Thanks also goes to Richard Budd, another parent who offered to 'shout about' his job! Dr Budd, from Lancaster University, came in to talk to Y5 and 6 about what university life is like - as a student and a lecturer. He explained why people to choose to go to university and what it is like to work in one. All great food for thought for our young learners.

Get ready for another rocket launch...

A year ago, we were part of a RocketFund campaign to raise money for programmable devices called Spheros.  https://rocket.fund/

We managed to raise enough money to buy six and they have been in constant use ever since. This year, we can see a need for more programmable devices in our Early Years settings. So, two of our Digital Leaders - Alfie and Pranav - have been busy creating a short video to support our pitch. Here they are explaining the project to our Chair of Governors, Glenys Hurst-Robson.

This campaign will hopefully run across the next half term. Watch this space!

Polite reminder

We appreciate that we are heading towards a very busy time of year, with lots of events and changes to plan for.

Attendance is extremely important as we move through the summer; children can begin to feel unsettled if they miss out on important events and news.

Our neighbours also face a busy period in Maryville Road as we welcome many of you into school. Please park respectfully and try to travel on foot if you can.

Sports Week 10 - 14 June

The first week back after the half term break is our annual Sports Week. All children are asked to come into school dressed ready for many sporting activities that are planned throughout the week.

To help you get organised, here's a note from Mrs Watts!

Whole school in sports kit all week

When it is your Sports Day try to wear a t-shirt of your house colour

Remember water, sun cream and hats, but coats and hoodies as well (we never know what to expect)

KS1 Sports Day is Tuesday 11th June. Gates open at 1.30pm and we will be done by 3pm. At the end please make your way to the normal pick up place. The children will be escorted to class and safely returned to you in the usual way.

Y3/4 Sports Day is Wednesday 12th June. Gates open at 9.45am and we will be done before 12pm.

Y5/6 Sports Day is Wednesday 12th June. Gates open at 1.30pm and we will be done by 3pm. At the end please make your way to the normal pick up place. The children will be escorted to class and safely returned to you in the usual way.

Whole School ‘Race for Life’ is on Friday 14th June. Wear pink if possible and bring a donation.

Throughout the week there will be additional activities on offer besides the usual PE Lessons and Sports Days. We have arranged taster sessions from HCFit who are Free Runners, a personal safety session from Judo Education and dance sessions from Loud Dance. We will try to share out the time slots to as many age groups as possible. The Sports Team and Pupil Sports Leaders will also provide additional opportunities to try including table tennis, sitting volleyball, badminton and of course a school favourite, dodgeball! I am currently investigating the possibility of a visit from the President of the World Dodgeball Society!
