July 2022

Welcome

This year has been a year of ups and downs at Prescot Primary. The downs of staff and pupil absence due to COVID have added to the difficulties of us returning to 'normality'. The ups of beginning to gather together for assemblies and staff meetings have injected the positivity we all needed. Finishing the year with so many chances to celebrate together is all the sweeter for the previous missed opportunities.

And of course, our recent Challenge Partners and Ofsted judgements, Apple Distinguished School recognition, Rights Respecting School SILVER - along with award nominations from Chester Zoo - leave us feeling proud of our pupils, staff and school community.

Prescot Primary & Nursery School is a wonderful place to be, whether in 'up' or 'down' moments and we hope you all feel the same.

Early Years Update

The EYFS team have recently celebrated our Nursery leavers with a wonderful graduation. Some children will stay on with us to move on to 'Blue School' and some will start new adventures elsewhere. Good luck to all of our little learners moving on to reception next year.

Of course, in September, we will be welcoming some new families to TEAMPCP. If you are one of them, we can't wait to say hello and help your little ones to quickly settle in.

We are saying goodbye to Mrs Morris, who has been our Reception teacher since January. Thank you for everything you have done for our children. The team will welcome back Mrs Campbell-Syers from maternity leave in September.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the EYFS team this year.

Reporting pupil progress: READING

Reading at PCP is getting better and better.  We expected our children’s reading habits to slow down towards the end of the year but we still have Word Millionaires popping up from behind their books.  So massive congratulations to: Mollie Sampson, Ethan Tyrer and Finley Leary from Year 5 Dragons, Daisy Hobbs, Lola Clegg and  Mariana Ferro Negrelli from Y6 Unicorns, and Ben Westhead from Y4 Kangaroos.  And a special mention for Harry Lee, who in Year 4 has become a Double Word Millionaire. There will no doubt be a few more before we break up for summer.  We are very proud of all of our readers and love to see their achievements.

Our library goes from strength to strength.  We now have almost three and a half thousand books for our bookworms to choose from.  It is lovely to watch our children using the library independently and with care.  They really do show ownership of our shared space.

One last piece of incredible reading news.  Our children have read more than a mind-boggling one hundred million words this year.  Even more incredible is the fact that this is 30 million more than last year, and 40 million more than the year before.  It’s safe to say reading is at the heart of our school.

This passion for reading is built on a solid infrastructure of skilled staff and reliable digital platforms. Our provision has resulted in our Y6 reading SATs data being above the national average of 74% with our cohort achieving an average of 83.3%. This is outstanding, especially given the turmoil of the past two years. Well done everyone, let's maintain our reputation as a reading school.

Sporting Success

We were delighted to hold our first Sports Week since pre-Covid on our wonderful, sunny field.

It was a massive success with a huge turn out from parents and carers, cheering on the children after a period of absence, which was amazing to see and hear again.

The children in KS1 competed in a variety of games and challenges such as balancing, beat the goalkeeper and weaving in and out of posts.

The children in KS2 competed in various events such as hurdles, skipping, flat and water races, allowing the children to test their skills in different areas.

ALL children behaved impeccably and showed a variety of characteristics such determination, strong will and courage to compete in front of so many people (some competing for the first time). This was applauded and celebrated during our closing ceremony at the end of the week with medals, certificates and awards.

However, it was the parents that attempted to steal the show by having a parents race, which the children, staff and spectators enjoyed greatly too.

Throughout the week the children competed in fundraising events to raise money for our school, we managed to raise £350 which will be used for equipment and activities for the next academic year of 22/23.

The children took 500 penalties during Monday lunchtime at Mr Stinchcomb and Mr Dobson, in our beat the goalkeeper competition.

Tuesday resulted in around 750 wet sponges launched at a handful of staff, to attempt to knock them off their perch.

Thursday was beat the hockey goalie, with Miss Watts attempting to save the children’s shots, with 'longest plank' and 'most push ups' competition either side.

A massive thank you to all the children, staff, parents and carers for contributing to such an enjoyable week, we are looking forward to making it even bigger and better next year.

As we say goodbye to Mr Stinchcomb, Mr Dobson will be taking over the role of PE lead and coordinator for the next academic year which will see a variety of clubs throughout the year.

CONGRATULATIONS THIAGO!

Thiago won an award for taking part in the LFC Foundation football after-school club. He was invited to Anfield one evening with his family, which he loved. His award was for supporting other children - being bothered to cheer along for them even if he wasn't taking part. We love this Thiago, what a great role-model for 'botheredness' you are!

Conservation Project 2022

Our fourth conservation project, on partnership with Chester Zoo, was all about Madagascar. We wanted the children to understand its diverse and unique character and learn more about the dangers that threaten life there.

Our children took to the whole school project as they usually do - with enthusiasm and passion. It's so powerful to see children across school learning about the same project in many different ways. Above all, our aim is to grow young conservationists; children that act for change... children who are truly bothered about protecting our earth.

Our trips to Chester Zoo empower the children further by allowing them to get up close to the creatures and learn more about habitats and eco-threats. We value the work done by the zoo and their education teams and look forward to developing our partnership further.

Our project culminated with a wonderful art gallery in the hall. Thank you so much for visiting and taking part in the activities and fundraising events. We raised around £700 that we will put back into school funds for next year's learning enhancements.

Y6 Unicorns

Our Y6 Unicorns have had a busy couple of weeks with Y7 transition days returning, practising for their leavers' assembly, a 'Wet & Wild Day' and a two week block of swimming! It has been wonderful to see our Y6 enjoy their last few weeks with us.

Thank you to all of the House Leaders this year. You have been amazing role models to the younger children and have really helped out with events and celebrations. Special thanks to lola, Jak, Mo and Edie, our House Captains, who have helped to appoint our Dragon House Leaders. Well done to Jessica, Finlay, Abiram and Isla - you'll hear more about them next year!

We gave some special awards out to Y6 children, for extra recognition if different areas:

The Pat Horabin Award was awarded to Freya Lonergan for rising to a challenge and showing true determination.

The Sharon Loftus Award was presented to Lola Clegg for enjoying every minute of every school day.

The Jane Watts Award for 'botheredness' was awarded to Joshua Budd for giving 100% to any activity - in school or out.

A special goodbye goes to all of the families who will be walking out of the PCP gates for the very last time. We will miss your support but you'll always belong to TEAMPCP - and we may see you back in the future, you never know!

Online Safety

As always, when a school holiday is imminent, we would like to remind you of the importance of online safety, especially when your children may spend more time on-screen during their holiday.

Whilst we cover many aspects of online safety in school, we would like to point you in the direction of some quality websites where you can find useful information and guidance. Our own website now has a stock of online newsletters that could prove useful too:

http://www.prescotprimary.org.uk/information/online-safety

https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/

https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/

https://beinternetlegends.withgoogle.com/en_uk/buildyourlegend/

Please do get in touch if you have any worries about your child's online activity. We must work in teams to protect our children from any dangers that the online world may present.

PCP iPads

Thanks to our Unicorns for returning their iPads. However, we didn't receive all chargers and leads so would like to remind all parents of Y2 - 5 children that you must look after leads & chargers and are expected to return them when the iPad is  returned to us in Y6.

Another important reminder for the holidays. iPads should NOT be taken out of the country. Please leave them at home should you be travelling abroad.

BC/ASC

We'd ike to say a huge thank you to ASC/BC parents for their support this year.  ASC/BC will continue as normal in September and parents/carers will be able to book sessions for W/C 5/9/22 from Thursday 1st September.

We are unable to open the booking window throughout the summer so please set a reminder to book on from the 1st!

Uniform/PE Kits

Can we remind you that in September, we would like all children in school uniform and school PE kits on their designated days. We have noticed that a variety of PE kits are appearing, some of which are not appropriate. PE kits do not include sequins, tassels or belly tops. Please prepare a school PE ready for September.

We recognise the comfort that trainers bring and so do allow children to wear plain black trainers instead of school shoes, if they wish.

Y6 will be given their free Y6 hoody once they return from PGL. These can be worn instead of school jumpers.

Also remember: long hair should be kept off the face with SIMPLE hair decorations. No jewellery except stud earrings.

Goodbyes

Our team at PCP has had a sad last few days as we have said goodbye to a handful of valued staff members.

Mrs Hewitson, our long-serving KS1/2 SENDCo, will be leaving TEAMPCP at the end of the summer term to begin adventures elsewhere. Mrs Hewitson first began her career here when she was Miss Carnduff, way back in 1997. Since then she has worked in schools in Tenerife and Kuala Lumpur before returning to PCP to serve as a class teacher, then SENDCo. Her dedicated service to our school - and the children and families in it - is hard to put into words. Mrs Hewitson never fails to ensure that our children’s needs are met; she has always put the learner first. The school community have long-since recognised what a force Mrs Hewitson is in her drive for an excellent provision for Special Educational Needs in our school. Recent reports from external agencies (Challenge Partners and Ofsted) have now also recognised the exceptional work that has been done. Mrs Hewitson leaves our school with an outstanding SEND provision in place and we thank her for commitment to every single learner in our community.

The KS1/2SENDCo position will be taken by Mrs Blackburn, our former Reception teacher and SENDCo, from Sept 2022.

Mr Stinchcomb is leaving his beloved Y3 to take up a post as a class teacher in Dubai. Mr Stinchcomb has worked as our PE Lead this year and has brought back to life our post-pandemic sporting calendar and club offering. This has been much appreciated by our children and he is a popular figure amongst children and staff. He has left us once before so we’re hoping that he may return to PCP for a third time but for now, we wish him every happiness in his new role. We know he will take his enthusiasm and dedication with him but we will always be grateful for everything he has done for our children. Keep in touch!

Mr McNulty is also saying goodbye to PCP. Many of you will know Mr McNulty as the ‘iPad expert’ but he has been so much more than that. Mr McNulty started as a classteacher 23 years ago and has worked in many year groups across school. Children have loved listening to him talk passionately about growing veg, making bread and scuba-diving. He has been a real influence on so many young minds. For some time, Mr McNulty has been the local representative for the NASUWT union and he is leaving us to further his career within the union. Congratulations on your new post as a National Official for the NASUWT. With relief, we can add that Mr McNulty will continue as one of our valued governors.

Mrs Tas is leaving Y4 for now to begin her maternity leave. We are all eagerly awaiting news of another PCP baby and hope all goes well as she prepares to welcome her little one. Watch this space!

We have also said goodbye to Mr Brown, our Music Teacher, Miss Jones and Mr Williams. Good luck to everyone who will soon be starting new adventures.

Finally, we would like to wish you all a wonderful summer, whatever you are doing. Rest and enjoy the time you have together.

We look forward to seeing you on Monday 5th September.
