MAY 2024

Welcome!

The summer term has been brilliant so far - even if the sun hasn't been out very much. We know that we have over 400 little rays of sunshine who come in and out of our school gates every day! Thank you for keeping up with the many events and activities. As always, we appreciate your support in being our partners as we educate your children together. Read on to find out news from across school.

Careers Week 24

As a Rights Respecting School, we place importance on enabling our children to look into the future and the kinds of careers they may want to pursue - even for our smallest children.

Each year, we hold a Careers Showcase and invite visitors to join us in promoting an inclusive, diverse view of the world of work.

This year, we loved saying hello to representatives from Matalan, Unilever, Astra Zeneca, QVC, MCC Digital and the Cheshire Downs Syndrome Trust. We also welcomed parents who were able to showcase being a vet and an engineer. Thanks to all of our visitors!

As part of Career's Week and a national writing task, Year 5 have been writing about their ideal job. James N in 5S wrote about being a vet - here’s a short sample of his writing:

If you like helping animals then this is the job for you. My dream job is a vet and I think you will love it too. Animals are very important in this world and keeping them safe and healthy is what you can do in return. In this job, you will need to love animals and be okay around blood. You will need to either open up an animal to see if there is any damage or if it’s hurt on the outside, you will need to look at it and solve the problem.

As a vet, you will work at a veterinary practice, remote, rural areas or in a laboratory. Sometimes you might need to work outside, you may also need to wear a uniform or protective clothing.

One of our pupils also wrote a letter of thanks:

First, a big thank you!
Thank you for coming to our school on Friday. It was very interesting and I was intrigued about your brilliant jobs! You explained your job very clearly and I understood every bit but my favourite was the activities (it's alright if you didn't have one - I still enjoyed it). You answered my questions and  made it easy to  understand every bit because when I researched them it didn't make any sense!
You listened to everything I said and really believed that I could be an actress. I really enjoyed it, so thank you very much!
Yours sincerely,
Alice, Y5S

Early Years Update

EYFS sports day - A huge success!

We are thrilled to say that our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Sports Day was a tremendous success! The event, held on Tuesday, was filled with fun, laughter, and a nearly 100 children. Our youngest PCP learners, aged just 3 to 5 years, displayed incredible energy and enthusiasm throughout.

The sun shone brightly, adding to the perfect atmosphere for fun-filled sports and activities. From running races to hurdles to beat the goalie and balancing, every child gave their best effort, and it was wonderful to see their smiles as they participated in each event in front of such a big crowd.  We are so proud of them all.

A huge thank you goes out to all the spectators – parents, grandparents, and friends – who came to cheer on the children. Your support and encouragement meant the world to them and added to the positive energy and we are sure this Sports Day will be a memorable one.

Thank you to all of the EYFS staff, it is by no means an easy task to manage that many children and to our Y6 students who’s help was greatly appreciated possible and helped create such a wonderful experience for our children.

Secure Your Child’s Nursery Place at Prescot Primary School

As we approach the new academic year, it’s time to make sure that you have added your child’s name to our waiting list for a place at Prescot Primary School Nursery.  To ensure a spot for your little one, please don’t delay in sharing their details with us. Our nursery places are in high demand, and September spots have already been allocated. We already have applicants who have only been born in 2024, so it is never too early to put their names down! Children can start the term after their third birthday, so act fast to register your interest!

To be added to our waiting list, please provide the following details:

- Child’s Full Name

- Date of Birth

- Home Address

- Contact Number

- Preferred Session (AM, PM, or Extended Childcare Offer)

And email to: admissions@prescotprimary.org.uk

Prescot Primary School and Nursery has proven to be the school of choice in the Prescot and Whiston area. We are proud to announce that we have filled all of our Reception class places with first-choice applicants and continue to maintain a waiting list due to our popularity. This highlights the trust and preference our community places in our school, as many schools have not filled their places this year.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to start your child’s learning journey with us here at PCP and be part of our thriving school community.

For more information, please contact me directly at the email provided above. We look forward to welcoming your child to Prescot Primary School!

Mrs George

Assistant Head EYFS and EYFS SENDCo

Important messages

School dinners

Due to significant increases in slary and food costs, we have made the difficult decision to increase the cost of our school meals to £2.40 per day, commencing 1st September 2024.

Applying for Free School Meals

If you are eligible, can we encourage all parents/carers to apply to the Local Authority in which you live for free school meals (FSM). If your child is in Reception to Y2, they already receive a universal FSM but school will receive additional funding which supports learning in a different way. Furthermore, currently, Knowsley Council fund a voucher for £3.00 per week day to spend at a supermarket of your choice during school holidays for every pupil in your family who is entitled to free school meals.

Reading Update

The summer term has been a busy one again, and reading has been at the centre of everything we do, as usual.   Year 6 completed their SATSs and were so prepared and confident. Their love of reading; the support from the entire school and at home; their Accelerated Reader and iPads, and their library all came together to give them everything they needed to take the reading tests in their stride!  We always knew they would.

Our Word Millionaires’ list is getting longer.  Congratulations to Dan and Elijah from Y6 Kangaroos, and to James and Logan from Y5 Tigers.  Evangeline and Olivia from Year 4 Penguins have also achieved this milestone, while Ore, Zoe and Dola from the Tigers became double millionaires!  We also have 9 new half-millionaires. We are, of course, really impressed by this, but something incredibly impressive happened this half-term that has never happened before at PCP… Kanishka has blown us all away by reading more than 5 million words in one school year!  We held our breath as we watched and waited.  Miss Ellen worked quietly behind the scenes to reach out to our favourite authors and we joined in Kanishka’s joy as Jeremy Strong delivered a warm and funny message via video link during assembly to congratulate her.  Kanishka will become a “TA for a Day” and will share her love of reading with our younger children.

We threw down a very challenging gauntlet this half-term.  We asked our readers to reach their reading targets as usual, but without the attraction of a reward if they succeeded.  We wanted to see who was “bothered”.  It turns out many of our children really are very bothered indeed, and we are delighted.  Next half-term we will offer the added enticement of reading rewards again.

RRSA Update: Our new friends at The Watchfactory

We were over the moon to be invited by The Livv Housing Group to go and meet some new friends at The Watchfactory in Prescot. Our Rights Respecting Leaders soon bonded with some of the residents in their wonderful 'Hobby Room'. Our children have learned how to play dominoes and draughts and the residents have learned how to play Connect 4. One of our Y6 leaders, Harry, said:

'I really enjoyed listening to Ken tell us his stories and showing us his photographs. It was so nice to sit and listen to him.'

We are planning to deepen our friendship by inviting some of the residents to school.

Conservation Project 2024

After a month of voting, our school community has chosen this year's conservation project: 'Singing for Songbirds'! This will be the second time that Prescot Primary has campaigned for the Indonesian songbirds as it was the focus of our very first project back in 2018!

Our whole school project, inspired by the work of Chester Zoo, will begin on our first day back when all classes will begin to explore the plight of the Indonesian songbird. We will be learning a campaign song that you will soon have going around in your heads! Clkick here to get a head start:

SEND Update

SENDCo Afternoon Tea for Parents and Carers

Last week, we hosted a lovely afternoon tea for parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). It was a fantastic opportunity for our SENDCos, Mrs. Blackburn and Mrs. George, to connect with families and share valuable information.

We talked about the benefits of using social stories to help children understand new social scenarios. Social stories are short descriptions of a particular situation, which can help children prepare for and cope with changes or unfamiliar situations.

We also chatted about the different support services available for SEND children and guidance on how to access them. Parents had the chance to ask questions and share their experiences.

The afternoon had a lovely cosy atmosphere, and of course, tea and biscuits. We appreciate all the parents who attended and contributed to making this event a success.

If you were unable to attend or have any further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Blackburn and Mrs. George at sendco@prescotprimary.org.uk. Additionally, please check your junk or spam folders, as important emails may have inadvertently ended up there.

We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future, as we believe in fostering a strong partnership between school and families to support the unique needs of our SEND students.
