PRESCOT PRIMARY SCHOOL                              OCTOBER 2019

Welcome to our October newsletter. We have had an extremely settled start to the year and an exciting one too, with lots of initiatives and projects to tell you about!

Firstly, thank you to all of our new starters, (children and parents) in Nursery and Reception! You have settled in well and seem to be enjoying your time spent in our school. There have been lots of smiles from the children which have been matched by the parents and families at the 'Stay & Play' events. It's lovely to have you in our team!

Visitors

Visitors help us to  bring a project to life and they also add a level of expertise that the children love to listen to. We have lots of visitors in to school this half term.

The Parentzone Team - Kate and Meg came in to lead a KS2 assembly all about Google's new scheme of work for online safety. The children enjoyed a highly interactive presentation that questioned how they should be behaving online in order to keep themselves safe. Google's programme centres around a land called 'Interland' and this is where the characters face new situations, with decisions to be made. The programme encourages children to be SHARP. ALERT. SECURE. KIND and BRAVE. We will be following this up with regular classroom sessions but you can find a link to the game here:

Bullybusters are a charity that we have worked in partnership with for some years. We had a visit from their team in preparation for Anti-Bullying Week in November. Children from Reception to Y6 listened well to a variety of discussions around: being a kind friend, what bullying means and the dangers of cyber-bullying. The children got chance to ask questions and have got a positive approach to looking after each other's feelings.

The 'Poet from the Peaks', Andy Tooze, visited school to share his poetry books with us all. We haven't had a visit from a poet in a long time so it was great for children to listen to the different things that inspire him to write poetry - from teachers to babies! Our children made us proud ith their interesting questions and engagement.

It has been a great morning!

Different visitors have also helped with our class projects. Dave came in to talk to Year 1 about life at Prescot Primary School many years ago. The children were focusing on our school in their local study project and they were fascinated to find out what had changed and what had stayed exactly the same! Thank you Dave!

Year 4 welcomed in the United Utilities team as part of their science project. The children explored the water cycle and the most efficient materials to supply water to our households. The children also looked at pictures of countries where water may be scarce and discussed the impact of this on everyday life. Their empathy skills were evident at this point!

Reading Rocks!

Since subscribing to Accelerated Reader in KS2, filling our library to the brim with high quality texts and continually investing in a technology-rich environment, our progress score for reading has increased. We have seen an unbelievable change in attitudes, engagement, confidence and skill. Parents and families at Parents' Evening were also very impressed with the support on offer in helping our children to become avid readers.

Well done to Pranav Ganjam - the first 'Word Millionaire' of the year!

The myOn reading programme is the next reading initiative that has been introduced to school. All children will receive their log-ins to a digital library of over 5000 books! There is a fantastic mix of genres that we have never been able to offer before. We hope you can try this with your child over the half term.

Art Projects!

We are currently involved with three art projects that will be ongoing throughout the year.

Y5 will be taking part in the Dot.art competition in the Spring Term. This is a digital, inter-schools competition culminating in an end-of-year exhibition. They are currently working on a theme!

Reception have taken part in a project for the Knowsley Arts Festival, supported by a group of Y5 children. This year's Arts Festival has the title 'Hopes and Dreams' and Mrs Davies is working with the Knowsley team to create something spectacular!

Finally, Y3 will be involved in an art project that celebrates the town of Prescot and contributes to some lasting artwork that will be displayed at key gateways to the town. Artist Martin Heron will work with Y3 in November to celebrate what they love about the town.

EYFS Open Days.

We are showcasing our Nursery and school for future families and would love you to share information about our next Open Evening for EYFS. This will take place on Wed 13th November, 4pm - 5pm.
