Curriculum - Spring Term

In Inspire Maths next term we will be focussing on multiplication.  It would be beneficial if children could learn the 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 timetables in preparation for this.  Children will have the opportunity to use concrete resources and visual representations to deepen their understanding of multiplication and division.  Children will then be required to link learning to problem solving scenarios. 


In Literacy and Language we will be exploring the mystery story Smash and Grab.  Children will explore how authors create mystery and suspense in their writing, and use similar techniques in their own writing.  Our other fiction unit The Enchantress of the Sands explores folk tales and stories from a variety of cultures.  Children will explore the key features, settings and dramatic language used in folk tales and will apply these to their own writing.

Our non-fiction units this term will focus on non-chronological reports and auto/biographies  Children will use written and audio resources to help plan their writing, with support We love it when children bring examples to share with the class so if you come across any examples of these texts at home or when out and about  then please bring them in.

We will be extending our literacy skills across all areas of the curriculum and through our topic Extreme Earth.  Children will get opportunities to write instructions for an archaeological dig, historical recounts and fact files.


Spring 1 – Rocks and fossils

In science this term as part of our Extreme Earth topic we will be exploring the amazing world of rocks!  Children will be able to name the three different types of rocks; igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. 
They will handle and examine rocks to identify their properties and will be able to state the four different types of matter that soil is composed of. 
They will be able to take part in and contribute towards an oral presentation of their observations. We will even become archaeologists and be exploring how fossils are formed and preserved through time, as well as the many varieties of soil!

Spring 2 - Plants
In our Plants unit children will learn everything they need to know about plants. They will learn the names of different parts of plants, and the jobs they do. The children will work scientifically and collaboratively to investigate what plants need to grow well, and will present their findings to their peers. Furthermore, they will have chance to predict what will happen in an exciting investigation into the transportation of water within plants. Through practical exploration they will identify the parts of a flower, and will explore the different stages of the life cycle of a flowering plant.


Through our topic work Tribal Tales children will step back in time to prehistoric Britain.  They will discover what life was like 5000 years ago and learn how people of Britain developed from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.  They will take on the role of ancient hunters and unearth ancient objects and mystical monuments that reveal the secrets of an ancient time.

Later in the term children will explore the dangers of historical natural disasters.  They will visit the ancient historical city of Pompeii, frozen in time under a blanket of ash.  They will learn what it was like to live in the town that saw one of the deadliest, overwhelming disasters in history.


Children will develop fieldwork skills through exploring maps and aerial images of prehistoric sites.  They will decide which places an archaeologist would consider worth investigating and why.  They will develop sorting skills and research their own lines of enquiry linking to the Stone Age.  

Later in the term children will explore the earth under their feet, through learning about: the layers of the earth; how volcanoes are made; and what causes an earthquake to occur.


In Religious Education the children will learn and gain new knowledge about Hinduism and the culture behind its name. The children will gain a better understanding of what Hinduism is and how this religion has its similarities and differences to other religions and cultures. Children learn about who founded Hinduism, where it was founded and where Hindus live in the world today. They will also learn from some of their Hindu peers.

Art and Design
In Art and Design we will research, design and create ancient hunting tools that meet the needs of a stone age hunter.  We will also consider the designs and patterns within natural prehistoric sites such as the stone circles.  We will celebrate our work by contributing to our classroom displays and publish pictures on our Twitter news feed, so follow us to keep up to date.
