Accelerated Reader

'Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading management and monitoring programme that aims to foster independent reading. The internet-based software assesses reading age, and suggests books that match pupils’ needs and interests. Pupils take computerised quizzes on the books and earn AR points as they progress.'

We have recently invested in the Accelerated Reader programme to further develop the children's enthusiasm for reading. We initially started the programme in Y5 and 6 but now have all of KS2 on board. The AR programme has been met with a positive response from teachers and children alike. So far, we have seen the children accessing our well-stocked library with a clear purpose - selecting appropriate 'real' books and searching for a variety of genres and authors.

We must acknowledge the importance of our 1:1 iPads in this process - children can take their 'bookshelves' home, read recommendations and add to their reading experiences by reading books in their home libraries. Parents and families can see what their child's reading profile looks like, with much more detail than we've ever had before. Children are very proud of their word counts and quiz scores and can talk confidently about books they have read.
