Research Projects

At Prescot Primary we believe that high quality educational research drives the development of classroom practice and school improvement.

We are now lucky enough to be working in partnership with the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), using their research findings and ‘toolkits’ and participating in a number of different research projects.

EEF: Peep Learning Together Programme – Nursery

This programme aims to develop parenting skills with a focus on the home learning environment in the early years.

The project is being evaluated by a team from Queen’s University Belfast, with the evaluation report due to be published in summer 2019.

EEF: ‘onebillion’ app research - Y1

In September 2013, Dr Nicola Pitchford from the University of Nottingham, conducted a randomised control trial to assess the improvements in children’s maths ability after using onebillion apps for 30 minutes per day for 8 weeks. This study showed that the children who used the apps made significantly greater gains in both mathematical concepts and curriculum knowledge.

We have signed up to join this research project and are looking forward to starting soon.

EEF: Reciprocal Reading - Y4, 5, 6

Reciprocal Reading is a structured approach to teaching strategies (questioning, clarifying, summarising and predicting) that students can use to improve their reading comprehension. By watching the teacher in action, then using these skills in groups, the ultimate aim if for students to use the strategies with increasing independence and sophistication.

This project is being led by FFT Literacy (part of the Fischer Family Trust). We are testing a whole class approach in Year 4 and a targeted approach for students struggling with reading comprehension in Years 5 and 6.

EEF: Craft of Writing -Y5

This trial involves teachers working with professional writers to develop their own confidence and identity as writers. Teachers will also learn about the processes and techniques used by professional writers.

Professors Deborah Myhill (Exeter University) and Teresa Cremin (Open University), who are internationally recognised as experts in writing research, will lead the project.

In addition to the above, we also benefit from the research undertaken by Apple and members of the Apple Community.
